In February 2009, the Chay Lap Community-based Tourism Cooperative, also known as “Rustic Chay Lap”, was established. It was the first community tourism project in the Phong Nha area and the former Quang Binh Province (now Quang Tri). The initiative received support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Counterpart International and was managed directly by the cooperative.
The project aimed to create sustainable income for local families and share with travelers the quiet charm of rural life: tranquil villages, gentle rivers, honest people, and beautiful nature in the land of Phong Nha.
However, the journey began with hurdles. The cooperative’s management team, though passionate, lacked experience in hospitality, communication, and business. Those early days were challenging, testing the perseverance of Rustic Chay Lap and its people.
In March 2016, Oxalis Adventure - Vietnam’s leading adventure tourism business, took over and further developed the project. The property was renovated and upgraded into Chay Lap Farmstay with the vision of continuing the community-based tourism model more professionally and sustainably.
Since 2018, Phong Nha Holiday (a member company of Oxalis) has taken over the management of Chay Lap Farmstay, ensuring the property remains true to the core values of the original community project:
Today, the traditional wooden house once used to host guests under the Rustic Chay Lap project has been transformed into a spa for herbal steam treatments and massage - continuing to offer the same rustic atmosphere and tranquility for guests, especially after jungle treks.
The old-style wooden house surrounded by greenery is dedicated to welcoming spa visitors.
Guests may select from three types of accommodations: Farm Rooms, featuring distinctive domed roofs of reclaimed pine and thatch; Garden Rooms, located in traditional tiled houses with large verandas suitable for families; and Mountain Rooms, minimally furnished with scenic mountain views. Each room is carefully curated to provide maximum comfort while maintaining a rustic, garden-integrated environment.
The Farm Room features cozy design and unique weather-adaptive architecture.
Chay Lap Farmstay provides wellness and culinary services rooted in local tradition. Guests can recover after a day of exploration with herbal saunas or traditional massages. The restaurant specializes in Central Vietnamese cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients from the farm or local suppliers. These offerings not only promote relaxation but also enhance guests’ understanding of the culture and rural life within the surrounding region.

Chay Lap Farmstay serves as an ideal gateway to the natural wonders and local lifestyle of Phong Nha. Guests can paddle along the Chay River, cycle through tranquil villages, or explore highlights such as Chay River - Dark Cave and Mooc Spring. For those seeking adventure, Oxalis Adventure offers guided cave expeditions, forest treks, and camping in iconic caves like Son Doong Cave, Hang En Cave, Hang Va Cave, ... Each journey is immersive and inspiring, allowing visitors to experience the region from multiple angles, whether drifting peacefully on the river, talking with villagers in the fields, or stepping into untouched forests, every moment provides a new perspective on the landscape, people, and heritage of this remarkable region.

Chay Lap Farmstay follows a green tourism approach, taking concrete steps to care for the environment. Since 2019, a 100 kWh solar energy system has powered the farmstay during the day, significantly reducing emissions. Alongside this, the farmstay recycles and reuses materials, sorts waste, limits single-use plastics, and protects natural greenery throughout the property.
At the same time, Chay Lap Farmstay also supports the local community: over 90% of the staff are residents of nearby villages, and local produce, materials, and services are prioritized. Guests’ stays become more than just a vacation; they are part of a journey to preserve nature, support communities, and embrace the values of sustainable tourism.
Whether for rest, adventure, or solely to enjoy the fresh air, Chay Lap Farmstay welcomes all guests with a sense of familiarity and tranquility, like coming home to a cozy countryside house in Phong Nha. Surrounded by serene mountains and gentle rivers, it creates memorable moments for families, friends, couples, and solo travelers who long for a simple yet meaningful escape.
